When I've come across those empties lately, I've been leaving them as I see them, thinking that the uploader will do "edit item" to add their content. Is that a poor supposition on my part?

Diana - I would recommend making them dark, because most people who've done this don't put items in them later. Anyone who's had this problem - please reply to explain why you're having trouble!

i don't recommend this tact -- to make the items
dark just because they don't have anything but XML in them.

case in point, i temporarily "undarked"
coffeehouse-Naomi-Ayala-Horses
year4animation
to take a look.

both only had XML, it's true, but both were "finished" by
users actions (vs. item being checked out for 48+ hours and getting checked in by the system)
and both items had the uploader go to the "/editxml/"
page and fill out more metadata.

this is indicative perhaps of the user being confused and clicking on "finished uploading", etc.
but if they got *this* far, it's likely they'd be able
to checkout the item later to add files.

I disagree with this, and will take the conversation offline :)

OK, I just dealt with another user having problems.
He was having problems using MSIE on Mac OS-X.
So I've updated the website to suggest that Mac users use
a regular FTP client since Mac doesn't support "drag and drop"
of files (it will just play the dropped item instead).

I've also added an explicit note that the users should use
their FTP client to change directory to the subdir that
is the name of their item.

I think this should help with the "empty items"!

I suspect that much of the confusion was due to dropping a file in a Mac MSIE browser as we instructed (and then it plays, instead of uploading) which made users think it was
playing while uploading.

let's see if the empties get less frequent.

I did talk directly with a user who was repeatedly checking out the item and trying to get content into it and checking back in (with no new files) (and the item only had .xml files in it), so it would seem that it would be nicer of us to leave "empty" items for now.
